Casenet
High-caliber engineering services delivered at all levels

Delivered the technical resources Casenet needed, when they needed them
Challenge
Casenet needed an onshore partner to help rewrite its flagship platform on greatly compressed schedule
Outcome
Over an extended four-year+ engagement, Surge – a Catalyte company helped Casenet redevelop its flagship TruCare platform and create single sign on (SSO) integration for its ProAuth product. Surge delivered on an aggressive timeline with a wide variety of technical resources, including: senior, remote engineers, full Agile teams, junior-level developers, QA engineers, project manager, scrum master/agile coaches and UI/UX specialists. The resulting improvements allow Casenet customers to focus more of their time and energy managing the highest risk members who make up the majority of healthcare costs, while allowing automation to ensure care plans are followed. This objective became even more vitally important during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Casenet develops population health management technology solutions that enable payers and providers to easily identify opportunities to more effectively coordinate care, resulting in better health outcomes and reduced cost of care.
It initially engaged with Surge – a Catalyte company to provide onshore, remote, senior-level engineering resources. This relationship grew to over 100 technical resources of all levels who were tightly integrated with Casenet teams, working on multiple business critical products. This included Scrum masters/agile coaches to help organize the large number of engineers and deliverables. The full Scrum team approach helped with efficiency due to the large scale of the projects.
Delivering against the clock
TruCare, Casenet’s flagship healthcare management platform, was originally written using Flash.
With that technology slated to sunset at the end of 2020, Casenet needed to rewrite the platform and make it compatible with HTML5. It needed a pool of engineers with Angular experience. It found that Surge’s senior-level network fit its needs for expertise, transparency, cost and ability to integrate with Casenet teams. The project was originally scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2020, but was moved up by nearly a full year. Surge was able to add additional agile teams to the project to meet this new, compressed deadline.
Expertise across the board
Due to the initial successes of the TruCare project, Casenet brought on additional Surge resources to create SSO integration for its ProAuth product.
Other vendors lacked the expertise and familiarity with Casenet to take on the complexities of this project. This was the first time a full development team working with Casenet didn’t include Casenet engineers. This level of trust and support was critical for Casenet, as Surge had developed the relationships needed for successful project execution.
“Casenet needs you to become part of the family. Surge was able to do that,” said Lee Braginsky, senior software engineering manager at Casenet. “Their teams were just as enthusiastic and conscientious about our projects as our FTEs were. We’ve been able to develop a trusted relationship with Surge. They’ve been instrumental to our success.”

From client to true believers
With high satisfaction and trust in Surge, Casenet carved out space in its development organization for Surge’s apprentice developers to work on UX/UI fixes and then QA across multiple products.
These apprentice developers come from nontraditional backgrounds, which is rare in the tech industry and something Casenet was skeptical of at first.
“I was a traditionalist and believed that a degree mattered,” said Braginsky. But, after working closely with apprentice developers on blended teams, Braginsky became a believer in this nontraditional model. “Their developers are just as good as anyone else. And the support system Surge provides ensures project success.”
Exceptional engineering at all levels
From senior developers to apprentices, Surge delivered the engineering expertise to get the job done right.
Scalable, flexible engagement model
From a handful of developers, to over 10 full Scrum teams; QA engineers, project managers, agile coaches and more. Surge was able to deliver the technical resources Casenet needed, when they needed them.
When you’re here, you’re family
Deep integrations with Casenet and conscientiousness about its business built high levels of trust and respect, leading to project success.
“Surge wasn’t a black box. We had direct visibility into the relationship and could work with Surge to engage the precise engineers we needed. Their teams represent a rare mix of junior and senior talent. The real difference between Surge and other teams is that they don’t just get the job done right, they are a part of us. With Surge it’s been a hug and an embrace. We’re one team; one family.”
